Architectural Revolution: The Hypogeum & Retractable Roof
Completed in 2024–2026 by architectural consortium L35, Ribas & Ribas, and GMP Architekten, the modernized Santiago Bernabéu is an unprecedented structural feat. The centerpiece of the redevelopment is the 30-meter-deep Hypogeum underground cave along the west stand.
The grass surface is divided into six automated longitudinal trays. Within minutes, robotic lifts transport the trays down into an underground greenhouse equipped with artificial lighting, automated irrigation, climate-controlled ventilation, and UV sanitation—allowing the stadium bowl to host concerts, tennis, and international events without degrading pitch quality.
Matchday Acoustic Performance & 360° Ring
The curved stainless-steel parametric bands forming the exterior skin, combined with the closed retractable roof, create a dramatic acoustic reverberation chamber. Decibel sensors during UEFA Champions League fixtures have recorded sustained sound pressure of 106.9 dB, creating a wall of sound. The 360-degree LED screen encircling the upper rim delivers real-time match analytics and synchronized crowd visuals.
Where to Go Pre-Match
Head to Calle Marceliano Santa María directly behind the south end (Fondo Sur). Supporters gather 3 hours before kickoff to chant, enjoy tapas, and welcome the official team coach arriving along Plaza de los Sagrados Corazones.
